Manchester United came away from Selhurst Park with their third straight 0-0 draw but their tepid display could have resulted in much worse.

Crystal Palace had the lion’s share of the chances during a tight contest and arguably deserved to take maximum points.

Yannick Bolasie hit the bar in the opening exchanges with a powerful effort and, in the second half, Yohan Cabaye should have steered home when unmarked in the box. Instead, the French midfielder miscued.

Manchester United’s best chance fell to the much maligned Wayne Rooney, who was slotted through on goal with a brilliant pass from Anthony Martial. The captain’s legs, however, could not keep up with the pace on the ball and Hennessey gathered.

That was, all in all, the sum of United’s attacking efforts in another display that drew criticism from supporters. In a week when Paul Scholes labelled Louis van Gaal’s side as ‘boring’, there were deliberate revivals of the midfielder’s old song in the away end – seemingly a kind of protest.
