Dave Whelan upbeat on Roberto Martinez's Wigan future despite persistent Everton talk

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan insists he and manager Roberto Martinez and not losing any sleep over the future of the Latics' boss.

The pair met for the second time in as many days yesterday with the Spaniard giving his chairman a wish-list of improvements for the club.

Whelan will consider over the weekend the viability of the requests which include revamping the training ground and improving youth development.

There is no guarantee that even if he agrees - and he is keen to do everything he can to help his manager - Martinez will stay.

But Whelan remains positive about the situation.

"We are not losing one bit of sleep over it," he told Press Association Sport.

"Whatever happens Roberto always wants to improve the club and wants to improve the development with youth - which I agree with entirely.

"He is just bothered about the future of the club. It is absolutely for the benefit of the club.

"If he wanted to move he would have said 'I'm going'. It is nothing to do with his personal benefit - we both want to make the club to be better."

Wigan's academy is already undergoing an overhaul in order to meet Elite Player Performance Plan Category One standards but Martinez seems to want to put deep-rooted changes in place to provide a solid base for the club's future.

That would appear to suggest the FA Cup-winning manager is prepared to stick around and try to get Latics back into the Barclays Premier League at the first time of asking after their relegation this season.

"It is all tied up in that. He wants to do certain things and I'm hoping I can assist in that but I'm not going to say I can if I can't and I want to look at it over the weekend," added Whelan.

"I have asked him certain questions in terms of what we can develop.

"I don't want to say yes until I've had time thinking about it.

"It is definitely not that difficult to be spending on the training ground and we have looked very seriously at that.

"We have had some good news from the planning office in relation to what we want to do will be acceptable.

"It will be Monday before I can promise anything."
