Striker set for decent run in the team due to Jermain Defoe's injury

Emmanuel Adebayor’s Tottenham Hotspur career could start again in earnest this weekend, if he returns in time.

Even on Thursday morning, Adebayor was still in Africa, days after Togo were knocked out of the African Cup of Nations. But with Jermain Defoe out for the next few weeks with ankle ligament damage, Adebayor has the chance to make the striking spot his own, beginning on Saturday lunchtime against Newcastle United, a game in which he excelled last season.

Since his permanent move to Spurs from Manchester City in the summer, Adebayor has struggled with fitness and form. He has only scored three goals, and never gone on the run of form he is capable of. Adebayor’s best single performance, away at Arsenal, lasted just 18 minutes before he was sent off.

Talent with Adebayor has never been the issue but there is a sense that he has not been on top of his game this season. The fans seem to think so, with some audible jeers for him at White Hart Lane.

Now there is a chance for Adebayor to win them back. As Spurs’ only fit striker, he can expect a long run in the side, if he is ready. All he has to do is show that he still wants it.
