Excitement is building on the red side of Stanley Park as Liverpool prepare to announce Jurgen Klopp as their new manager.

The arrival of the former Borussia Dortmund coach will unleash a fresh wave of optimism among a set of supporters who haven't had much to cheer about so far this season.

Fans will be particularly excited to see how Klopp adapts his preferred playing style to the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp's best quotes

During his time at the Westfalenstadion, Klopp took the rank underachievers to consecutive Bundesliga titles, playing the fast, physical 'gegenpressing', his brand of dynamic counter-attacking football.

He claimed a few scalps on the way, including those of his soon-to-be fellow Premier League managers.

Each of Manchester City's Manuel Pellegrini, Chelsea's Jose Mourinho, Manchester United's Louis van Gaal and Arsenal's Arsene Wenger came up against Klopp during his time at Dortmund. So, how did the incoming Liverpool boss fare?

In one of the most memorable games of Klopp's reign at Dortmund, he emerged triumphant over Pellegrini's Malaga in the 2013 Champions League quarter-finals. After a goalless stalemate in the first leg, two goals in injury time from Marco Reus and Felipe Santana turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead for Der BVB. Their manager, tie-loosened and emotionally spent by his side's late comeback, gave a post-match interview to Sky Sports despite barely being able to stand up straight. You imagine he's enjoy a late victory over Manchester City just as much.

vs Jose Mourinho, P4 W2 D1 L1

Klopp's side met Mourinho's Real Madrid in the subsequent semi-finals and produced another barely believable display. Dortmund were superb in their 4-1 demolition of Madrid. Robert Lewandowski scored four but it was the overall team performance that left Gary Neville purring.

He was co-commentating on the game for Sky Sports and was amazed with what he saw, describing the "energy, intelligence and quality" of Dortmund's play as "stunning".

The former full-back left wishing he could see a game between Klopp's side and the treble-winning Manchester United team he played in. He might just have to do with Klopp's Liverpool against the current day United.

A 2-0 defeat in the second leg was not enough to turn the tie around and Dortmund progressed to the final. Earlier that season, the two clubs had met in the groups, where Klopp once again came out on top. A 2-1 victory at home was followed up with a 2-2 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu, which gave Dortmund top spot ahead of the Spanish gaints. Manchester City, part of the same group that year, came bottom.

vs Louis van Gaal, P4 W2 D0 L2

Van Gaal took charge of Bundesliga monoliths Bayern Munich during the 2009/10 and 2011/12 campaigns, meaning he saw Klopp's star rise first hand. In his first season at the Allianz Arena, he took maximum points from Dortmund in the league, with a thumping 5-1 victory at the Westfalenstadion and a 3-1 win at home. The tables, however, turned.

The following year, Dortmund struck an early blow in the title race with a 2-0 win and boosted their credentials later that season by running out 3-1 winners at the Allianz. By the end of the campaign, they were champions and Van Gaal's tenure was up. His replacement, Jupp Heynckes, could not prevent Klopp from making it consecutive league titles in 2012.

vs Arsene Wenger, P6 W2 D1 L3

The Arsenal man is the only manager of the Premier League's big clubs who Klopp has a less-than-good record over. Wenger has matched up against the 48-year-old more times than any of the others and has come out on top half of the time, notching three wins in six Champions League group stage games.

In 2011/12, a draw and a defeat to Arsenal contirbuted to Klopp's side finishing bottom of their group. Two years later, both sides beat each other away from home, amassed 12 points and were lucky to escape their group, with third-placed Napoli only being eliminated on head-to-head goal difference.

Then, last season, the pair met again in the groups. This time, they both beat each other at home and both qualified, with Klopp's men edging ahead of Arsenal again on goal difference.
