Arsenal have made initial contact over a transfer for Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema, according to reports.

Spanish news outlet El Confidencial have reported today that the Frenchman is not saying "no" to having discussions with the Gunners.

Arsenal have been strongly linked with Benzema for a couple of seasons now, and the reports suggest the north London club have tabled a £31m bid.

Benzema has been at Real Madrid since 2009, after joining from Lyons for £35m. He has scored 133 goals in 281 appearances for the Spanish giants.

There have also been reports that Gareth Bale will move into the central striker's role for Real next season, and that Benzema is not at the front of new manager Rafa Benitez's plans.

Arsenal have only made one signing so far in this transfer window, albeit a very important one, with veteran goalkeeper Petr Cech joining from Chelsea for £11m.

The 33-year-old Czech international ended 11 trophy-laden years with the Blues this summer to move across London to Arsenal.
