Kolo Toure has spoken of his honour at being chosen as the replacement for Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

In his first press conference since joining Liverpool on a free transfer after his contract with Manchester City expired, Toure spoke of what it means to move to the five-time European champions, labelling it as an “unbelievable” opportunity.

“Liverpool has to look for someone to replace him (Carragher),” Toure said. “It is a big honour. To be chosen as Jamie Carragher's replacement is unbelievable.

“He's been a fantastic player for England and this football club. He is a great leader. It will not be easy but I will do my best.”

Toure was speaking alongside fellow new signing Simon Mignolet. The Belgian international spoke of his communication with Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, and his excitement to compete with current Reds keeper Pepe Reina.

“He (Rodgers) spoke to me about that,” said Mignolet. “It's not really something that has to go outside of the club. Competition is going to be in every single club.

“There was big competition in Sunderland with Craig Gordan and Keiran Westwood. Also big competition with the Belgian national team.

“Everywhere you go, especially when you go to a bigger club, there's going to be a fight for places. It's a challenge that will only make you stronger.

“In the games I will get a chance to show what I can do.”
