Leicester City's Kasper Schmeichel denies reports of hamstring injury
The 29-year-old has been a staple of the side who currently sit atop of the Premier League table by five points
Kasper Schmeichel has moved to ease the concerns of Leicester City supporters by addressing rumours he had picked up a hamstring injury while on international duty with Denmark.
The 29-year-old has been a staple of the intrepid Foxes side who currently sit atop of the Premier League table by five points and was named the Danish Footballer of the Year last week.
With only Mark Schwarzer, 14 years Schmeichel’s senior, in reserve, Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri would endure a considerable headache if his No 1 choice was to suffer an injury over the course of their seven-match title run-in.
But the Denmark goalkeeper, in the squad for the friendly against Scotland at Hampden Park on Tuesday night, confirmed on Twitter that any concerns over his fitness are premature.
Schmeichel said: “Just to confirm: I have NOT withdrawn from the Denmark squad and I have NOT hurt my hamstring. I left training today (Sunday) as a precaution.”
Ranieri, enjoying the international break in his native Rome, has been able to watch on as a number of his title-chasing side enjoy successful stays with their respective national squads.
Jamie Vardy scored the second goal, a stunning back-heel flick past Manuel Neuer, as England overturned a two-goal deficit to defeat Germany in Berlin while N'Golo Kanté emerged from the bench to make his debut for France in the Netherlands.
Shinji Okazaki also found the net on his 99th appearance for Japan – a convincing 5-0 demolition of Afghanistan – while Jeffrey Schlupp and Daniel Amartey featured for Ghana.
Riyad Mahrez, meanwhile, the leading contender for the PFA Player of the Year, set-up four goals en route to a 7-1 victory over Ethiopia for Algeria.
