Coventry have signed Tim Flowers, the 35-year-old Leicester City reserve goalkeeper, on a month's loan.

Roland Nilsson, the Sky Blues manager, is short of an experienced goalkeeper as Magnus Hedman, the Sweden international, has a hip injury and Andy Goram is a long-term casualty. Goram has had his contract settled by Coventry and has become a free agent.

Leicester will have to rely on Ian Walker, the former Tottenham goalkeeper, to help them try to avoid relegation.

Carl Cort, the Newcastle striker, is close to a return to first-team football and may make the substitutes' bench for Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland. The 24-year-old scored his second goal in as many games for the reserves against Sheffield Wednesday on Monday night.

Cort has been out of action since last May when he damaged ankle ligaments in a post-season friendly. He was on the verge of returning in August, but damaged knee ligaments.

Clayton Ince, the Crewe goalkeeper who performed so well in the FA Cup draw at Everton, may leave at the end of the season in a contract dispute. The Trinidad and Tobago No 1 has been offered a three-year deal but has rejected the terms.

Richard Edghill's Manchester City days look numbered after he turned down a new one-year offer to stay. The long-serving defender, also due a testimonial after a decade at Maine Road, is likely to leave City in the summer.

Portsmouth seem poised to sign the Bulgarian international, Svetoslav Todorov, from West Ham for £750,000.

Stuart Ripley has returned to Southampton after Neil Warnock, the Sheffield United manager, ended his trial at Bramall Lane.

Fortuna Sittard have taken the English striker Benjamin Galliers on trial. The 22-year-old is under contract to Dynamo Dresden, but has made little impact since signing from Rot-Weiss Essen 18 months ago.
