Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has described witnessing his former club’s away dominant 4-1 victory over Manchester City as ‘like watching the Red Arrows’.

Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho starred as Jurgen Klopp’s side dismantled an out of sorts City with three goals in a superb first-half display, both scoring after Eliaquim Mangala's early own goal. Sergio Aguero pulled one back for the hosts after the break before Martin Skrtel added Liverpool's fourth with a memorable late strike.

Carragher said the performance, the second significant away win the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager Klopp has delivered after beating Chelsea 3-1 last month, ranked alongside the best the club have delivered in the modern era.

“The first 35 minutes was as good as anything I can remember,” Carragher told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “Not just from Jurgen Klopp but from any Liverpool team in the Premier League, especially going away to a big team.

“For Liverpool supporters in their 40s or 50s, that run is Ian Rush running on to a Kenny Dalglish or a Jan Molby pass. 'It was like the Red Arrows, watching Liverpool. Those runs, going through people all the time.'

The former Reds skipper praised the new manager’s effect on the side after Liverpool’s tireless pressing pinned their hosts back and forced them into costly defensive errors.

“It was the first time we’ve seen his work, offensively. And the damage he can cause, and that's from working with those players for 10 days in the international break.”

Following a disappointing start to the season Liverpool have climbed to ninth in the Premier League after losing just one of Klopp’s first nine games in charge in all competitions.

The defeat ensured Manchester City did not return to the top of the Premier League, with Manuel Pellegrini’s side now sitting in third, two points off league leaders Leicester.
