Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admits he speaks with captain Wayne Rooney about team selection, and even asks for his opinion on what food his team-mates should eat.

Van Gaal says he can trust the 29-year-old to give an honest opinion on a wide range of topics - even what the team eat.

"Things like the selection and the kitchen and the members of the staff, everything you can mention, he is involved," Van Gaal told The Sun.

"I think he trusts me so that is also very important and I trust him. So when he comes to me and has remarks I always pay attention."

Van Gaal made Rooney his skipper last season as he took over the reigns at Old Trafford.

United travel to Swansea City in the Premier League today. Last term, Swansea defeated United both home and away.
