Louis van Gaal has become a hugely popular figure among Manchester United fans, more for his antics off the field than his tactics on it.

The Dutchman is a very funny, straight talking character, who appears willing to joke at his own expense for the benefit of fans.

Video has emerged of Van Gaal putting on a - pretty good - Irish accent after the team's 2-0 won over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon.

On his way out of Old Trafford Van Gaal stopped for fans and signed autographs, the manager in high spirits.

One request saw Irish fan Catherine Doyle ask the 64-year-old to send a message of support to GAA team Portlaoise.

After a moment's hesitation, Van Gaal duly responded.

"We met him last year and I had the feeling he'd be up for the craic... he's very warm, very affable, he speaks to everyone," Doyle told the Irish Independent.

"He came up to say hello and I just asked him.. he obviously didn't know what it meant (but) I knew he would do it."

She posted the video to the Portaloise Facebook page and has seen the video rack up more than 90,000 views in just a couple of days.

Doyle added: "They were playing this weekend too... I think that's part of the reason it went so mad!

"They won and we won as well... so everyone is happy!"

Portlaoise reached the last four of the Leinster football championship on Sunday after a 2-5 to 0-10 win over Sarsfield's of Kildare.
