New Manchester United boss, Louis van Gaal, wants his England contingent to take full part in the club's pre-season tour of the United States.

Wayne Rooney, Luke Shaw, Danny Welbeck, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling all travelled to the World Cup as part of England's squad in Brazil, but will be expected to join up with their United teammates when they fly out to a Californian training base on 18th July.

England's last match of their dismal World Cup campaign was on 24 June in Belo Horizonte, meaning the five United players will have had a few days less than the standard four weeks off that players are normally given.

In contrast, Robin Van Persie, who's more successful Netherlands team find themselves in the semi-finals of the competition, will not join up with the squad until August.

Van Gaal takes official charge of United once the Netherland’s World Cup campaign ends - either on Saturday following the third place playoff or Sunday if they make it to the final.

Former Dutch international Ronald de Boer believes Van Gaal is the right man to try and return Manchester United to glory after their woeful past season.

“Van Gaal is the best coach I ever worked with. He is the best chance for a team to have success,” De Boer told TalkSport. “Nobody really believed in this [Holland] team, but I said, ‘if one man can change this team, it is Louis van Gaal’. It is the same for Manchester United. Sometimes you need a bit of luck, of course, like we have had in this tournament and it will be the same at Manchester United.

“In the long term you will have success with him, but do you have the patience? He could win the Premier League title, or maybe the Champions League, but it is not really realistic, of course.”
