Under-pressure Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will decide whether to bring Wayne Rooney back into his side for Monday night's Premier League meeting with Chelsea at Old Trafford.

The club captain came off the bench for the second half of his side’s 2-0 defeat at Stoke on Boxing Day, as Van Gaal's men lost their fourth game in a row.

Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger returns after serving the third instalment of his three-game ban for violent conduct against West Ham United’s Winston Reid earlier this month.

Full-back Matteo Darmian could return from a hamstring injury, but Jesse Lingard (hamstring), Marcos Rojo (shoulder), Antonio Valencia (foot) and Luke Shaw (leg) are out.

The game at Old Trafford could potentially be Van Gaal’s last, as speculation intensifies regarding his position.

Following the defeat at the Britannia Stadium, the 64-year-old Dutchman hinted that he could resign before Monday night’s game.

"It is not always the club that has to fire or sack me,” he said.

"Sometimes I do that by myself, but I am the one who wants to speak first with the board of Manchester United and my members of staff and my players, not with you.”
