Manchester United keen for Paul Scholes to return as youth team coach at Old Trafford

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has informed Paul Scholes that there is a place for him on the Old Trafford coaching staff.

Rumours had surfaced during the summer that the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager wanted to bring in his own team, but van Gaal is happy to welcome the United legend onto the payroll at Carrington.

Scholes was famously part of the coaching set-up at the end of last season as former team-mate Ryan Giggs took over from David Moyes for the final four games of an ill-fated Premier League campaign.

It had appeared to many that the 39-year-old had burned his bridges at Old Trafford after criticising a series of United regulars in a weekly World Cup column for a national betting company.

Chief executive Ed Woodward, along with van Gaal, still feel that Scholes has something to offer, however, and look set to offer him a long-term deal.

"We still value Paul and his qualities very highly," a United official told the Daily Mail. "As far as we are concerned the door remains open."

The Red Devils got their pre-season tour of America off to the best of starts with a 7-0 demolition of LA Galaxy in van Gaal's first game in charge.
