Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has cast a major doubt over his future at Anfield, saying that the Reds most recent contract offer to him was "unacceptable".

"I am still waiting for the new contract," the Slovakian Skrtel said.

The 30-year-old's current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2016.

"It's unacceptable for me. I think that contracts like this offered to players who are much older than me or the player who had some health problems.

"The contract which has been offered to me is unacceptable, so I did not sign it. I have one year left and there has been some speculation about the interest from other clubs. We will see what happens."

Skrtel also spoke of the failings of Liverpool on the pitch last season, and highlighted the departure of striker Luis Suarez to Barcelona as one of the main factors. Brendan Rodgers' side finished sixth in the Premier League.

"We failed because we did not meet the targets we have set," he said.

"If we finish in fifth or sixth, it does not matter, we would still not qualified for the Champions League.

"The significant factor was the exit of Luis Suarez [to Barcelona last summer] and too many errors on the field. The squad was big enough.

"New players arrived and it is not always easy to acclimatize with the new club, so the first half of the season was difficult. The second part has been improved, but the conclusion was we did not reach our targets."
