Next Aston Villa manager: Sol Campbell signals interest in the job
Former Arsenal and Tottenham defender makes his interest known through social media
Sol Campbell appears to have thrown his hat into the ring to become the next manager of Aston Villa.
The Premier League club are seeking a new boss having dismissed Paul Lambert earlier this week. The Independent understands that Tim Sherwood is the front runner for the job, with the former Spurs coach being the only contender the club have spoken with.
But an unexpected contender emerged on Friday when Campbell took to Instagram to make his interest in the vacancy known.
Alongside an image of the Aston Villa crest he wrote: "Another one bites the dust! Surely i’ve got a chance! Sol Campbell manager!"
With some thinking it was a joke, the former Arsenal and Tottenham defender appeared to confirm he was serious: "To the end of the season. It Would be a challenge that i would want to take head on and win!"
Campbell has never held a coaching role although was recently linked with becoming a member of staff at Ajax after visiting the Dutch team to learn more about their methods.
