Premier League highest earners: Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney leads the way but only one Arsenal star makes the top 10

REVEALED: Top 10 highest paid players come from just four clubs

As we revealed last week at the close of deadline day, Manchester United have the most expensively assembled squad in the Premier League.

The near £100million that Louis van Gaal spent this summer means United squad has been put together at a cost of nearly £400m, with neighbours City close behind.

But a club's spending doesn't just stop at a transfer fee - wages are often a much bigger outlay.

Wayne Rooney has been revealed by the Daily Mail as the highest paid player in the Premier League, earning around £260,000-a-week (before tax, not including bonuses) to captain Manchester United. Rooney is on a five-year deal, meaning the total cost of his wages will be an eye-watering £73m if he sees it out without renegotiating.

David De Gea has just signed a new deal at Old Trafford but is estimated to be anywhere between £160,000 to £200,000-a-week - that would be high enough to push him into to the top 10 but isn't confirmed.

His high wages are well above the Premier League average, around £44,000-a-week but the average wage at the City is in excess of £95,000-a-week.

Two new City players have gone straight into the top 10 and although they didn't have the highest wage bill last season, they probably do this. City players fill up half of the top 10 highest earners, followed by three Chelsea players and just one each from Arsenal and Manchester United.
