Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero, Alexis Sanchez, Alvaro Morata, Romelu Lukaku… the list could go on. The Premier League is filled with a wealth of quality strikers and the race for the 2017/18 Golden Boot could be the most closely contested in the league’s history.

Ahead of the final day of the 2016-17 Premier League season, Lukaku, Kane and Sanchez all stood with a chance to finish the season as Golden Boot winners, however Kane’s hat-trick on the final day ensured the prestigious award was his. It was another ground-breaking season for Kane who improved on his exquisite form from the previous campaign.

Sergio Aguero was hotly tipped to star under new manager Pep Guardiola who vowed to improve Manchester City’s prize possession. The Argentine found form in the Champions League but discipline and injuries hampered his Premier League starts to just 25, much less than his rivals.

Arsene Wenger addressed Arsenal’s striking dilemma by converting Alexis Sanchez to a central sticker and it proved profitable. Sanchez returned his best goals total (24) in the Premier League since joining and continued to help the team with ten assists.

The miserable demise of Leicester City was one of the stories of the season and for the Foxes: the goals dried up. Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, who had been so influential when Leicester won the Premier League in their 2015-16 season which captured the imagination of football fans everywhere. Vardy only returned 13 goals compared to the previous season’s 24 and Mahrez only scored six compared to the 17 he scored on Leicester’s march to the title.

Next season Chelsea have a £70million striker to add to the equation. Alvaro Morata arrives from Real Madrid with one of the best strike rates in Europe averaging almost one goal per 90 minutes. The versatile Spanish forward can play various roles in attack and scores a range of goals that will see him challenge for the Golden Boot in May.
