Former Blackburn defender set to join relegation fight

QPR have reportedly triggered a release clause for Christopher Samba, believed to be in the region of £10m.

Harry Redknapp is urgently trying to bring in reinforcements as QPR aim to beat the drop and the former Blackburn defender is among his top targets.

Samba left the Premier League a year ago to move to Russian club Anzhi.

Howeever, his time in Russia has been dogged by alleged racism and his family has remained in England.

It's understood the player is keen on a move and will try to force the issue, telling Anzhi he wants to move for personal reasons.

The departure of Ryan Nelson, who has been appointed as manager of MLS side Toronto FC, and the loan move for Anton Ferdinand, has increased the need for QPR to sign a new defender during the current transfer window.

Redknapp said after last night's 0-0 draw with Manchester City: "We are struggling a bit.

"We lose Ryan Nelsen now and I haven't got a replacement.

"We are desperately short. The chairman is dealing with it (Samba deal) I don't know where we are at with it.

"He (Tony Fernandes) asked me about a week ago if I would be interested if he could get me Samba and I said 'of course, he is a fantastic competitor'."
