Ryan Giggs: Manchester United 'offer role' on Jose Mourinho's backroom staff, not as assistant manager

Mourinho, who is expected to succeed the dismissed Louis van Gaal, wants to bring long-time assistant Rui Faria to Old Trafford

Ryan Giggs has been offered the chance to stay on at Manchester United but not in his current role of assistant, according to reports.

Jose Mourinho, the former Chelsea manager, is expected to be appointed the club’s new manager in the coming days following Louis van Gaal’s dismissal, which was confirmed on Monday night.

Giggs worked alongside the Dutchman for the duration of his two-year spell at Old Trafford and was touted as his eventual successor.

However, according to Sky Sports News, the former winger could be set to end his 29-year association with the club.

Mourinho is keen to bring his long-time assistant Rui Faria to Old Trafford to act as his deputy, having worked alongside his fellow Portuguese for the entirety of his managerial career.

Faria’s arrival would effectively mean a demotion for Giggs, who was also part of David Moyes’ coaching team and acted as a caretaker manager after the Scot’s dismissal two years ago.

Giggs was seen leaving the club’s training ground, Carrington, on Monday morning, where it is believed that the situation was outlined to him by Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman.

According to Sky, Giggs will meet with Mourinho in person before making a decision, although such a meeting is not expected to take place until after Mourinho's contract has been agreed.

Giggs, who joined the club as a youth player in 1987 and went on to make 672 appearances over a 24-year-long professional playing spell, is the club's most decorated player.

The former Wales international won won 24 major honours during his time at Old Trafford, including 13 Premier League and two Champions League titles.
