Ryan Giggs remains the favoured choice to replace Louis van Gaal as Manchester United manager, rather than Jose Mourinho, it's claimed.

The current assistant manager has long been viewed as a future Old Trafford boss, however Mourinho has become the strong favourite to be installed as the next manager should Van Gaal, as expected, be dismissed.

The latest odds see the former Chelsea manager as short as 1/5, while Giggs is in comparison at 6/1.

Despite that, the Mirror claim that Manchester United are ready to snub Mourinho and install the club's record appearance holder instead.

Some at the club do not think Mourinho's abrasive manner and tactically cautious approach to big games is a suitable fit at Old Trafford. Despite the Portuguese coach's incredible track-record of delivering trophies, the club would apparently rather gamble on Giggs.

The Welshman commands the respect of all those at the club and is understood to have impressed in his role as understudy to Van Gaal. The club will look at the success of Pep Guardiola, whose first senior management job was with Barcelona, as evidence that untested coaches can succeed at the top of the game.
