Steven Gerrard claims Liverpool will treat Norwich 'like the best team in the world'

Captain says complacency will not be an issue as Reds close in on first title for 24 years

Steven Gerrard has revealed he wishes Liverpool's remaining four games of the season could be played in the next four days as the pressure mounts on the Premier League table toppers.

Victory over Manchester City has put the Reds firmly in the driving seat for the title with just four games to navigate in order to win a first title since 1990.

Next up for the Reds is Norwich, much easier on paper than the test Liverpool came through against Manchester City; However, with the Canaries at serious threat of relegation Gerrard is aware Liverpool must prepare in the right way for the game at Carrow Road.

“Every game is getting bigger because we are getting closer to the last game of the season,” he said. “Man City was always going to be huge because they are in the race with us but Norwich now become Man City. Norwich become Chelsea. Norwich become Manchester United. That's how big it is.

"We have got to treat Norwich like we treated AC Milan in 2005. That's just how football is. We can’t think about what colour shirts Norwich are wearing and the personnel in them. We have got to treat them like the best team in the world."

The win over Manchester City saw Liverpool notch up 10 Premier League wins in a row, a run that has taken them from top four contention to title contenders. But Gerrard knows that run will have been for little if his side slip up against Norwich this weekend.

“We have got to forget where we are and forget what we have done. We have just got to focus and prepare for Norwich now. We have got to treat it like it is the last game of all our careers. That is the mentality.

“We have been on a magnificent run. We could win 13 on the spin but lose the last one and we won’t get anything. Nobody will remember it. The only way people will remember it is if we go on and win it. Otherwise you get a pat on the back. We’ve all had them but they come and go. What is key as a footballer is getting something to show for all the hard work.”

After Norwich, Liverpool will play Chelsea, Crystal Palace and then Newcastle on the final day of the season. Victory in all of them will guarantee success but in the most thrilling season in recent memory, few would bet against a few more twists before the end of the campaign. Gerrard feels it is getting close, but still wishes it could be over sooner.

"I want the games to come every day, not every week. I’d love to play the remaining four games in the next four days but it is not possible. I have to manage the time well and make sure that I’m not getting anxious and wasting unnecessary energy.”
