The Italian believes Gerrard is capable of continuing in a deeper role

Steven Gerrard has “many top years left” for Liverpool and England, according to Andrea Pirlo.

The Reds captain has been deployed in a deeper role this season, a move by his manager Brendan Rodgers that takes account of Gerrard's advancing years.

The 33-year-old has excelled, helping Liverpool make a genuine push for the Premier League title. And the role could allow the England captain to continue playing for many more years for both club and country according to Pirlo.

“The intelligent players adapt and Steven Gerrard has the ability to do that," the Juventus midfielder said.

“He is an excellent passer of the ball, possesses an intelligent football brain, and has great vision. He has all the qualities to play a deeper role."

34-year-old Pirlo, regarded by many as the best technician to ply his trade in front of the back four, added: "If you look after yourself and are willing to adapt, there is no reason why you can't play at the top level until your late 30s.

"Gerrard is a top professional, it is very possible he has many top years left for Liverpool and England in a new role."
