Harry Kane rescued a point for Tottenham with a stoppage-time penalty to earn a 2-2 draw against West Ham.

The Hammers had won on their two previous visits to White Hart Lane and seemed on course to extend that record as goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Diafra Sakho gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.

But a mistake from West Ham goalkeeper Adrian enabled Danny Rose to equalise with nine minutes remaining before Alex Song felled Kane in the box and the striker picked himself up to score his 24goal of the season.

Mauricio Pochettino made six changes from the team that drew 1-1 with Fiorentina on Thursday but Spurs produced a lethargic performance in keeping with their record at home after Europa League matches, rescued only by a late rally.

West Ham were disciplined from the outset and encouraged into the match by Spurs’ frequent individual mistakes which gifted them possession in promising positions.

A mix-up between Kyle Walker and Mousa Dembele allowed the Hammers to take a 22 minute lead. Aaron Cresswell crossed from the left and Kouyate drifted in behind Eric Dier to plant a firm header past Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Mark Noble was fortunate not to be sent off for a late tackle on Nabil Bentaleb having earlier received a caution for pulling Andros Townsend’s shirt but he remained on the field to help double West Ham’s advantage.

With 62 minutes played, the Hammers midfielder crossed to the back post where Sakho was lurking and the Senegalese striker beat Lloris from an acute angle. Enner Valencia looked offside when Noble delivered the assist but referee Jon Moss deemed him not to be actively influencing play.

Spurs had earlier brought on Christian Eriksen for the ineffective Mousa Dembele but they struggled for any attacking cohesion, requiring poor goalkeeping from Adrian to half the deficit.

The Spaniard flapped at Erik Lamela’s cross, pushing it straight out to Rose, who mishit his volley into the ground but it looped over Adrian and found a path into the far corner.

Time was running out for Spurs but Song tangled with Kane in the box and the 21-year-old made no mistake from the spot to keep Spurs in touch with the Champions League places and deny Sam Allardyce’s side their third straight victory on this ground.
