Victor Valdes takes up offer from Manchester United

Goalkeeper will train under Louis van Gaal as he completes his rehabilitation from a knee injury

Manchester United have offered Victor Valdes the chance to complete his rehabilitation from injury at Old Trafford.

The goalkeeper became a free-agent over the summer when his contract with Barcelona expired.

Prior to his hugely successful time at the Nou Camp coming to an end, the 32-year-old suffered a serious knee injury.

Reports had suggested that Liverpool were the front-runners to sign the highly-rated Spain international, however the developments at Manchester United suggest they may have fallen behind in the race to sign the goalkeeper.

"Valdes, a free agent, will have his recovery supervised by the United medical staff before training with the first team, as he bids to regain full fitness."

There is no mention of whether United will sign Valdes once he has recuperated, although it seems likely the option will be discussed.

Van Gaal, who worked with Valdes during his time as manager of Barcelona, has Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos in reserve behind David De Gea.

The arrival of Valdes will likely increase speculation over the future of De Gea, who has been mooted as the long-term successor to Iker Casillas at Real Madrid. However, in a recent interview De Gea said he was happy at United.
