Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney is to take a break in Dubai to aid his recovery from a knee injury, according to reports.

The 30-year-old has not played since 13 February after damaging ligaments against Sunderland at Old Trafford.

The striker will have his knee kept in a brace for another two weeks as he bids to return to full fitness.

According to the Daily Mail, United manager Louis van Gaal has granted Rooney permission to travel to Dubai for a week to aid his comeback.

Team-mates Bastian Schweinsteiger and Phil Jones recently spent time their to aid their own injury recoveries.

The report claims that Rooney is unlikely to be fit in time for England friendlies against Germany and the Netherlands at the end of this month, although he could return to club football before the end of March.

"No, he does not need an operation," said Van Gaal. "He may be back in March."

Roy Hodgson's Three Lions kick off their Euro 2016 campaign against Russia on 11 June and there is no suggestion Rooney will be anything but fully fit for the tournament.
