West Ham interested in taking Olympic Stadium capacity up to 60,000

The Hammers were to set to limit the capacity to 54,000 but season ticket sales have sky-rocketed

West Ham United want to increase the capacity of the Olympic Stadium to 60,000 in response to high levels of interest in season tickets, according to vice-chairman Karren Brady.

The east London club are set to move across the capital from Upton Park at the end of this season but Brady admits the initial 54,000 seats may not be enough to meet demand.

After a succession of sell-outs at the soon-to-be defunct Boleyn Ground, the former Birmingham City director believes West Ham can attract much larger crowds once the move is complete.

The Hammers are currently 7th in the Premier League table under manager Slavan Bilic and are hopeful of securing a spot in the European places to herald in their new era at the Olympic Stadium.

Speaking to BT Sport, the Brady said: “It’s 54,000 [at the moment], we are looking to take it up to 60,000 because demand for season ticket’s has been so high that we’ve now got several times as many people that want season tickets than we can actually fulfil demand, so, we are looking at increasing the capacity.”

The Hammers have agreed a 99-year lease with the London Legacy Development Coporation, amid ferocious political pressure to release full details of the arrangement.

It was revealed earlier this year that West Ham are expected to pay just £15m of the conversation costs, thought to be in the region of £272m. Critics include former Leyton Orient chairman Barry Hearn.
