Andros Townsend said an "emotional" goodbye to Tottenham Hotspur as the England winger waved goodbye to 16 years at the club.

The 24-year-old is on the verge of a £12million move to Newcastle United and is expected to sign a contract and undergo a medical at St James' Park on Wednesday.

Townsend, who has 10 England caps, has not played for Spurs since October following a row with fitness coach Nathan Gardiner following a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa in November; Townsend had been an unused substitute and had to watch as teenager Josh Onomah came on ahead of him.

The winger had been frustrated under Mauricio Pochettino having played in just three Premier League matches this season, all appearances from the bench. He has been playing with Tottenham's Under-21s since.

He had been linked with a move away in the summer but Spurs decided to keep hold of him.

After news broke this morning Townsend took to social media, posting a picture of him leaving Tottenham's training grounds with the caption "emotional" and a sad face.

Although plenty of Spurs fans were keen to wish him luck, rival fans did not hesitate to criticise Townsend, or Newcastle for spending so much:

Steve McClaren has now spent more than £80m since taking over the club.
