Angel Di Maria to PSG: Manchester United winger faces uncertain future at Old Trafford as Edinson Cavani swap deal offer looms

United's swift movement in the transfer market has raised concerns that Di Maria is primed for a move away from the club

Manchester United fans will have been forgiven for waking up this morning and pinching themselves after the club completed deals for Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin within 15 minutes of each other, but there could yet be more upheaval at Old Trafford in regards to the future of Angel Di Maria.

The £59.7m British record signing is wanted by French league champions Paris Saint-Germain, and a bid is expected to be made for the Argentinian this summer following their manager Laurent Blanc’s admission that he remains interest in Di Maria.

The most expensive Premier League signing in history struggled for form during his debut season in England, and the 27-year-old struggled to settle in following his move to England when his Cheshire home was burgled in February this year.

It’s understood that PSG are looking to take advantage of his unsettled start at Old Trafford to try and lure him to the French capital, and despite Di Maria’s personal desire to return to Real Madrid – where United signed him from last season – it’s unlikely that the Spanish club will afford him that opportunity.

Di Maria did not travel with the United squad for their pre-season tour of the United States after he and Argentina team-mate Marcus Rojo were afforded a holiday to recover from their Copa America commitments during the summer, and he is unlikely to return in time to play in United’s season-opening fixture against Tottenham on 8 August.

But whether he will ever play for United again hangs in the balance given PSG’s admission that they want to sign the La liga winner, and it emerged that a swap deal involving Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani could be on the cards in order to seal Di Maria’s move to the Parc des Princes this summer.

United and PSG will actually play each other at Soldier Field in Chicago during pre-season on 30 July, but negotiations between the two clubs are unlikely to take place in the US. United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who has been widely praised this summer for his movement in the transfer window that has also seen Memhpis Depay and Matteo Darmian join, is currently in Seattle with Louis van Gaal’s squad, but is expected to return to the United Kingdon when the squad fly on to San Jose in order to continue with United’s transfer plans.
