Arsenal's interest in Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho is increasing as the Gunners stall on a move for Sami Khedira over the German's wage demands.

According to reports, the Real Madrid midfielder would want wages of £170,000 per week - a figure which Arsenal are unwilling to meet.

They are also concerned by the former Stuttgart enforcer's injury record - Khedira was out for five months of last season with a serious knee injury, only making his return to action as part of Joachim Low's victorious German World Cup squad.

Carvalho represents a younger, cheaper and perhaps more attractive option. The Angola-born Portugal international currently earns just £5000 per week at Sporting, though he would command a similar fee to the £24 million that Real are demanding for Khedira.

The Sporting youth team graduate made 29 league starts last season, helping the Lions to a second-place finish. He was also part of Portugal's ultimately disappointing World Cup campaign, making two appearances as Paolo Bento's side crashed out at the group stage.
