Mario Gotze: Bayern Munich refuse to rule out move as Liverpool lurk around World Cup winner
The German’s contract at the Allianz Arena runs out in 2017, and he has yet to discuss his long-term future with the club
Mario Gotze’s long-term future at Bayern Munich is in doubt after the Bundesliga champions admitted they have yet to discuss a new deal with the forward whose contract runs out next year.
The German international, scorer of the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, has recently been linked with a move to Liverpool and a reunion with his former boss Jurgen Klopp.
It was Klopp who promoted a then 17-year-old Gotze to the Borussia Dortmund first team in 2009, and soon handed him his professional debut.
Gotze later moved on to Bayern for a German record fee of €37m, but despite his heroics in Brazil 18 months ago, his playing time under Pep Guardiola this season has been limited.
The 23-year-old has managed only seven league appearances, often from the bench, and has not featured at all since October due to a hamstring problem leading the player to admit that he may have to consider his career.
Bayern’s Sporting Director Matthias Sammer originally laughed off suggestions of Gotze leaving the club, but has now admitted that discussions will be needed ahead of Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival at the Allianz Arena as Guardiola’s replacement.
“I said it was madness when there were rumours about a transfer in January, whereas Mario was talking about the end of the season.
“Mario's comments were an indication that we will have to sit down at some point in the coming months and discuss his situation.
“That is only logical. I cannot see anything negative about what Mario said. He has put a few things up for discussion.
“We will clarify everything in the second half of the season. A lot of things will have been resolved by then.”
