Carl Jenkinson transfer latest: West Ham 'leading the race' to sign Arsenal right-back as Gunners career looks to be over

England international could leave on loan but the signing of Calum Chambers appears to signal the end for Jenkinson at the Emirates

West Ham are believed to be winning the race to land Arsenal right-back Carl Jenkinson on a season-long loan as they compete with Hull for the England defender.

Jenkinson’s future at the Emirates has been thrown into doubt after the double-singing of Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers, with the Gunners securing a £16m move for the latter on Monday afternoon.

22-year-old Jenkinson, who arrived at Arsenal in 2011 from fellow London club Charlton Athletic, had been earmarked by Arsene Wenger as the long-term successor to Bacary Sagna. The French right-back left the club this summer after running down his contract and joining Premier League champions Manchester City on a free transfer, but the two defensive acquisitions clearly show that Wenger is not willing to put his faith in Jenkinson as his regular starting right-back.

Hull are believed to be looking into a move for the England international, who made his one and only appearance to-date for the senior team in a second-half cameo against Sweden in 2012. But the Daily Mail reports that the Hammers are closing in on their man on a season-long loan, rather than the Tigers’ desire to take him permanently.

It’s claimed that Jenkinson would like to remain in London, meaning that Swansea – who are also said to be interested – will turn to preferred target Kyle Naughton from Arsenal’s rivals Tottenham.

Arsenal fan Jenkinson endured a testing start to his Arsenal career after spells with Charlton, Welling United and Eastbourne Borough, as he was criticised for his performance and red card in the 8-2 defeat to Manchester United in just his second Premier League start of his career – and just his fourth appearance in total.

A loan wouldn’t close the door completely on his stay with Arsenal, but the future certainly looks bleak as Wenger looks set to turn to Chambers as the preferred option for the future.

Southampton could look to replace Chambers with Jenkinson - they certainly need to sign someone after their summer exodus - and there are reports they will also move for his Arsenal team-mate Serge Gnabry.
