The England goalkeeper Jack Butland has signed for Stoke City in a £3.5m deal as the transfer window closed.

The 19-year-old had turned down a move to Chelsea last week because the European champions could not offer him first-team football. However, a crucial part of his switch to the Britannia Stadium will see Butland immediately loaned back to Birmingham City for the rest of the season.

The Championship side needed to sell during the January transfer window to ease their mounting financial problems and accepted the £3.5m bid from Stoke, despite interest in Butland from Manchester City, Southampton and Everton.

Butland, however, has opted to move to Stoke and that raises questions over the future of Asmir Begovic. Liverpool and Manchester United, who are expected to strengthen their goalkeeping position, could both now make a move for the 25-year-old goalkeeper in the summer. Stoke also signed the American Brek Shea for £2.5m after the winger received a work permit.

Arsenal were also major players on deadline day, with Arsène Wenger pushing through an £8.5m deal for the Malaga defender Nacho Monreal. The 26-year-old left-back finalised a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Danny Graham completed his £5m move to Sunderland on a three-and-a-half year deal from Swansea. The 27-year-old returns to his native North-east vowing to silence those fans who criticised him when he played at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday.

"Of course, I totally understand that some fans might need convincing about my commitment to Sunderland because of my [Gateshead] roots," Graham said. "But I've always given 100 per cent no matter what team I play for and no matter who I play against and it's up to me to show people I deserve to wear the Sunderland shirt."

Everton, like Stoke and Sunderland, chose to go for homegrown players. They signed the Barnsley defender John Stones for £3m, fighting off interest from Wigan, who also tabled a bid for the England Under-21 defender.

Wigan did land their former player Paul Scharner on a loan deal until the end of the season from Hamburg. "It really is fantastic to be back," Scharner said. "Wigan will always have a big place in my heart so to be asked to come back and help the team now is something special."

Tottenham failed in their pursuit of the Internacional striker Leandro Damiao after the Brazilian side said Spurs' bid fell short of their £20m valuation. The Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes did move, leaving on loan to join Hoffenheim.

Premier League strugglers Aston Villa signed the France Under-21 international Yacouba Sylla for £2m. Sylla, 22, who signed a three-and-a-half year deal to move to Villa Park, said: "I can't wait to fight for the club and help the club to climb the table." Villa also brought in winger Simon Dawkins from Spurs on loan. Dawkins has spent several seasons on loan at San Jose Earthquakes.

Norwich saw a fourth bid for the Celtic forward Gary Hooper turned down. They did land one forward, Luciano Becchio, from Leeds, with Steve Morison heading to Elland Road as part of the deal. The Leeds manager, Neil Warnock, also signed his namesake Stephen Warnock from Aston Villa.

Fulham completed several loan deals, to take the Bulgaria right-back Stanislav Manolev from PSV Eindhoven and Urby Emanuelson from Milan. Kevin Phillips has moved from Blackpool to Crystal Palace and Matthew Upson has gone on loan to Brighton from Stoke.
