Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey could go on-loan to Crystal Palace as Ian Holloway looks to strengthen his squad

Midfielder is not in Rodgers first-team plans and may seek a short-term move away from Anfield in search of regular football

Liverpool’s Jonjo Shelvey could be heading to Crystal Palace as Ian Holloway is reported to be seeking a reunion with the midfielder on a season-long loan.

The Eagles boss worked with Shelvey when he took him on a short-term deal at Blackpool in which Shelvey flourished under his leadership, and Holloway has targeted the 21-year-old as he looks to strengthen his squad for their return to the top flight.

Shelvey has seen his first-team opportunities limited under Brendan Rodgers, making just two league appearances this calendar year, and he is likely to be told that he can leave the club when he sits down for talks with Rodgers later this month.

Palace aren’t the only team interested, with Norwich, West Ham and Swansea also believed to be interested in the attacking midfielder on a permanent deal. Should Shelvey still believe he can be a success at Anfield though, a loan deal may be his preferred option while he is not in the first team plans.

Shelvey signed for the Reds two years ago in a £1.7 million deal from Charlton, and he went on to make his England debut last November against Sweden. Holloway brought Shelvey to Blackpool on a two-month deal in late 2011, where he scored six goals in 10 starts in the Championship, and the promise of first-team football at Selhurst Park may be the deciding factor in the potential switch.

The Championship Play-off winners are expected to complete the signing of former West Bromwich Albion winger Jerome Thomas on a free transfer to add to the permanent deal of Stephen Dobbie, while Dwight Gayle should become the club’s record signing when he joins from Peterborough for an initial £3.25m, rising to £4.5m, on a contract believed to be for five years.
