Liverpool transfer news: Mario Gotze told to reconsider decision to stay by Bayern Munich chairman

The 23-year-old midfielder has been linked to Liverpool and a reunion with Jürgen Klopp, his former mentor

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has suggested that Mario Götze could still leave Bayern Munich, days after the midfielder appeared to commit his future to the club.

The 23-year-old has one year remaining on his current contract with the Bundesliga champions and is known to be a priority transfer target for Liverpool.

Götze, however, is keen to stay on in Bavaria and told reporters on Monday that he was looking forward to working under Carlo Ancelotti, Bayern’s incoming head coach.

However, Rummenigge, the club's chairman, is surprised at Götze’s desire to remain at the Allianz Arena and has suggested that the midfielder should reconsider his decision if he wants regular playing time.

“I had talks with him (Götze) and Ancelotti. Mario knows the thoughts of Bayern,” he told Kicker magazine. “Everything was clearly and seriously explained to Mario.

“He knows what the club thinks and what the new coach thinks. Mario has to evaluate for himself whether he wants to play constantly.”

Götze’s commitment to Bayern appeared to rule out a reunion with former mentor Jürgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, who oversaw his development as a youth player while in charge of Borussia Dortmund.

“I look forward to the new season in Munich and will do everything possible to be in top shape for my first training session under Carlo Ancelotti,” Götze said to Bild on Monday.

Joachim Löw, the Germany national team manager, has included Götze in his preliminary 27-man squad for this summer’s European Championships and backed his player’s decision to stay at Bayern.

“Mario has had offers, but I always felt he is in Munich with his heart and he wants to prove himself there,” he said at a press conference on Wednesday.

“He told me he wants to stay in Munich and take his chance with the new coach and I think that’s a fine decision because it’s what his feeling tells him to do, so it’s the right decision for him.”
