Liverpool transfer rumours and news: Ilkay Gundogan boost with Saido Berahino to replace Daniel Sturridge

Liverpool have been handed a boost in their hopes of signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan after Juventus pulled out of the running to sign the Germany international, although he could yet decide to stay at the Signul Iduna Park by signing a new long-term contract.

Gundogan has garnered the attention of both Manchester United and Liverpool, with recently appointed Reds manager Jürgen Klopp keen to be reunited with one of his former players from their time together at Dortmund. With reigning Serie A champions Juventus deciding against a move for the 25-year-old, it appears the two Premier League rivals could battle it out for his signature, although the player admitted it’s likely that any new contract with Dortmund will be a long-term one, with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season.

"No decision has been taken yet and of course everything has to be thought through because the length of one's career is limited," Gundogan told German newspaper Bild.

"To be honest everything is still open," Gundogan said, adding his next contract would be longer. "I think it will go into that direction. When I sign, it will most likely not be for just a year."

Klopp has already been warned off making a move for Gundogan’s Dortmund team-mate Neven Subotic, with the club’s manager Thomas Tuchel insisting that the Serbian defender will not be leaving the club this month.

“To Subotic, I can say that we need him as an integral part of the team,” said Tuchel. “If it remains solely my decision, there is not the slightest reason for a change.”

Elsewhere, Liverpool are said to have entered the race to sign West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino, with the England Under-21 striker’s future very much in the balance. Both Tottenham and Newcastle are believed to be interested in the 22-year-old, who has struggled to feature in Tony Pulis’s first-team plans this season after pushing for a move to White Hart Lane in the summer.

The Mirror claims that Berahino could prove to be an eventual replacement for injury-prone Daniel Sturridge, with suggestions that manager Klopp is losing patience with the England international’s inability to string together a run of appearances together since the German arrived at Anfield to replace Brendan Rodgers.

Liverpool are also seeing little progress in their pursuit of Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia, with current head coach Roberto Mancini insisting that Ranocchia has not asked to leave the Serie A club and is yet to hand in a transfer request. The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Liverpool to aid Klopp’s extensive injury concerns, with Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren, Kolo Toure, Joe Gomez and Jon Flanagan all currently unavailable.

However, the former Manchester City manager told Sky Italia: "No player has come to me and asked for a transfer, including Ranocchia.”
