Loic Remy latest: Newcastle United handed boost in bid to sign Chelsea striker
Chelsea striker could head for St James' Park today as Claudio Ranieri targets CSKA forward
Newcastle United appear to have been given a boost in their attempt to sign Chelsea striker Loic Remy before the transfer window closes this evening.
Remy is set to leave Stamford Bridge today, and was widely expected to join Leicester City, with reports that the Claudio Ranieri’s side would seal an £11m deal for the France international.
However, Sky Sports are reporting on Monday morning that Remy is actually Leicester’s third-choice striker, with CSKA’s Ahmed Musa the subject of an £18.7m bid and Dwight Gayle understood to be a back-up option.
That potentially leaves Newcastle as the favourites to sign Remy, who was a huge success on loan with the Magpies during the 2013-14 season.
Newcastle had a £21m bid for West Brom’s Saido Berahino rejected on Sunday, but Remy would represent a favourable alternative.
Remy is eager to leave Stamford Bridge in search for first-team football ahead of this summer’s European Championship in France.
A potential stumbling block in a move, however, may be that Remy would prefer a loan move, whereas Chelsea favour a permanent sale.
