Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho officially starts work at Old Trafford today with the Portuguese hoping to mark the occasion by getting a deal for Henrikh Mkhitaryan over the line.

Mourinho has already completed the signings of defender Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer as he continues his redesign of the squad he inherited from Louis van Gaal.

Ibrahimovic signed a one-year contract, with the option for a second season, on Friday after leaving French champions Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer while Bailly was ensnared from Villarreal in a deal which could cost up to £30m.

But, according to the Daily Mirror, United are not finished there as they pursue Armenian midfielder Mkhitaryan and Juventus star Paul Pogba – the latter of which likely to become a world-record acquisition from the Turin giants.

Dortmund inadvertently announced Mkhitaryan’s switch to United before backtracking, deleting a post on their website which suggested a move was imminent, but it is expected to go through nonetheless.

United are believed to have offered £26m for the 27-year-old to persuade the German club to sell despite fears of an exodus unfolding at the Westfalenstadion following the departures of Mats Hummels and İlkay Gündoğan to Bayern Munich and Manchester City respectively.

Juan Mata, meanwhile, has been linked with a transfer to Everton as Ronald Koeman flexes the financial muscle afforded to him by new owner Farhad Moshiri.
