Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes that Everton’s Romelu Lukaku should be top of his old club’s shopping list this summer.

The Belgium international is the second-highest scorer in the Premier League this season, having notched 18 times in 28 league appearances.

Saha, who followed his time at Old Trafford with a four-year-long stint at Goodison Park, has been impressed with the 22-year-old since he made his loan spell with the Toffees permanent.

Lukaku, who struggled for game-time while on the books at Chelsea, has kicked on since his £28million move to Merseyside and Saha believes a club at the other end of the East Lancs Road should now register an interest.

“I rated him highly when he was at Chelsea, when he was young. I could see he was not ready but now he has performed really well at Everton," he said in an exclusive interview with the International Business Times.

“Definitely, he will bring something to the United side because he is strong, he has got that presence to trouble the central defenders.

“With someone like Lukaku on United's side, especially his presence around the box, along with [Anthony] Martial playing on the left and [Wayne] Rooney also linking with Lukaku, it will be great,” Saha added.

Over the course of his two-and-a-half years at Goodison Park, Lukaku has scored a total of 59 goals in 116 games.

This season, only Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy is ahead of him in the Premier League’s scoring ranks, with a total of 19 goals.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez rubbished reports that Lukaku had a £65million price tag in January and insisted that the Belgium international was only interested in scoring goals for the Toffees.

“With Rom, the only thing that interests me is his next target. He wants to score goals, he wants to become better,” he said.

“I think it’s been a fantastic journey in the last 13 months. You have seen an evolution in his play that has been quite magnificent.

“He has been reliable, consistently there, a focal point for us and all I’m looking at is for him to carry on becoming even better.”
