Memphis Depay to Liverpool: Brendan Rodgers says striker is 'very talented' when asked about possible transfer

Rodgers admits finding a new striker is the top priority this summer

Brendan Rodgers refused to confirm or deny that Liverpool will make a move for Memphis Depay this summer, but after labelling the PSV Eindhoven player "very talented", a bid for the youngster looks probable.

Depay is one of the most in demand strikers in Europe this summer after enjoying a fruitful season that's seen him score 21 league goals, helping PSV to their first Eredivisie title for seven years.

The club have confirmed that the Netherlands international will probably be sold this summer, with a host of clubs interested, including Manchester United. Liverpool have also been linked with a move for a player who will cost in the region of £25m, however Rodgers was coy about a bid despite admitting he admires the striker.

“I can’t confirm either way - you know me, in terms of speculation of players,” he said. “The kid is a very talented player, of course. But I wouldn’t like to confirm either way."

Liverpool have struggled desperately in front of goal this season following the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona. In addition to the Uruguayan's absence, Daniel Sturridge has missed most of the season through injury while summer arrivals Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert have failed to make an impact.

“It’s clear we need the goal threat for next year," added Rodgers. "There’s going to be a whole raft of players that I’m sure will be looked at, then will be up to the club if they’re affordable and if they’re available.

“We’ve identified that [a striker] as a priority. We’ll have to see availability first, and then take it from there.”
