Tottenham have agreed a fee for Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm and will discuss personal terms with the Netherlands international ahead of a move to White Hart Lane, it has been reported.

Spurs are closing in on the signing of Vorm’s team-mate Ben Davies, with the young left-back set to head to North London after undergoing a medical with the club. Former Swan Gylfi Sigurdsson looks set to go in the other direction having failed to make the grade since joining Spurs two years ago.

The move for Vorm – believed to be around £5m – is a rather strange one, given that current number one Hugo Lloris signed a new five-year deal earlier this month to extend his contract through to 2019.

The France captain is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and while Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino would like to have two high quality goalkeepers to provide competition and pus each other on, the likelihood is that Lloris would remain first-choice with Vorm a more than capable back-up.

At 31 years old, Vorm is unlikely to develop much further having proven himself as one of the Premier League’s best with the Welsh club, and it is the threat of spending long periods as Lloris’ understudy that has led to concerns regarding the move on the Dutchman’s part.

However, a number of high-profile clubs across Europe are interested in Lloris, with Paris Saint Germain expected to have made a move for the French captain this summer before he put pen to paper on his new long-term contract.

The money-rich French champions could still restart their pursuit of the 27-year-old next summer, leaving the door open for Vorm to step-up as Tottenham’s starting goalkeeper.

He would also allow current No 2 Brad Friedel to move up and take a prominent coaching role alongside goalkeeping coach Tony Jimenez, as well as continuing his impressive 14-year Premier League career.
