QPR have reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the loan of defender Ricardo Carvalho for the 2012/13 season.

The 34-year-old former Chelsea player is yet to agree personal terms with the west London club according to reports, with talks between the player and the club taking place over the next couple of days.

The capture of Carvalho is a statement of intent from Mark Hughes' side, with the Portugal international having won eight major trophies during his time with rivals Chelsea, as well as a Champions League with Porto.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has made it clear Carvalho is not part of his first-team plans this season.

The news follows the announcement that QPR have agreed a fee with Tottenham, understood to be in the region of £8m, for the transfer of centre-back Michael Dawson.

The pair would bolster a defence that leaked five goals at home to Swansea on the opening day of the season, and would complete a star-studded rear-guard.

Former Chelsea right-back Jose Bosingwa was brought in this summer at right-back and Fabio Da Silva in on loan from Manchester United to fill the left-back position. Goalkeeper Robert Green joined from West Ham having run down his contract.

Manager Hughes will be hoping that both the loan deal for Carvalho and the transfer of Dawson can be completed in time for Saturday's Premier League trip to Norwich.
