Robert Lewandowski to Manchester United: The reasons why Bayern Munich will not sell the striker to Louis van Gaal this summer

Lewandowski has been linked with a £35m move to Old Trafford as United continue to press on with their transfer plans

Manchester United are being linked with a big-money move for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski a day after completing a move for his former team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger.

United also completed a £24m move for Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin to take their summer spending to nearly £80m, following the earlier acquisitions of Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian.

The Telegraph is reporting that the spending will continue towards an incredible £300m this summer, but here’s why a move for Lewandowski will not happen.

Bayern have already insisted that they will not sell another player to United given their interest in Germany striker Thomas Muller, and with Lewandowski only a year into his Bayern career, the club will want to keep the Poland striker among their ranks.

Having shown his eye for a goal during his four years at Borussia Dortmund – where he notched 74 goals in 131 Bundesliga outings – the 26-year-old was landed on a free transfer and helped Bayern to a third straight Bundesliga title last season. However, Bayern are determined to return to the top of the European tree having failed to reproduce their victorious 2013/14 Champions League campaign, and Lewandowski will be instrumental to those plans this season.

United are in the market for a striker following Robin van Persie’s move to Fenerbahce and the decision not to sign Radamel Falcao on a permanent deal at the end of least season. At present, they have just captain Wayne Rooney and the inexperienced James Wilson to choose from in attack, although manager Louis van Gaal has pondered deploying new signing Depay in attack given he is talented enough to lead the line.

Lewandowski scored 25 goals in 49 games last season

At around £35m, Lewandowski would certainly offer Bayern a huge return on the free transfer they completed for him last year, but one season would represent a poor use of one of the most prolific strikers in Europe, and at 26 years old Lewandowski is likely to have his best years ahead of him – meaning Bayern would be foolish to cash in on him this summer.
