Tottenham transfer target Vincent Janssen has hit against his club AZ Alkmaar after they rejected a £16.5m offer from Spurs for the Holland striker.

The forward scored 26 goals from 32 appearances last season and finished as the top goal-scored in the Eredivisie.

Janssen has been identified by Mauricio Pochettino as a suitable back-up to Harry Kane with the club looking set to lose out on a deal for Marseille’s Michy Batshuayi.

The 21-year-old has expressed his desire to play in the Premier League but fears his move could be in jeopardy on account of his club’s stubborn transfer policy.

Speaking to Dutch television, Janssen said: “I have expressed my choice to the club. In my opinion, Spurs bid a high amount.

“At the moment I’m still a bit disappointed with AZ. I’m disappointed with how they behaved. I would like to make the move.”

Wolfsburg has also expressed an interest in Janssen who has three years left on his contract.

“I indicated I would take the next step and want to get away from the club. They know and are aware of,” Janssen said.

“It’s a shame, I would have wished that it would go a little faster. Sure it’s fine to train again. AZ is a fantastic club but I want to make that next step for my development.

"Ultimately I hope to shake people’s hand here and walk out of the door on good terms.”

Spurs had originally believed a £12m deal for Janssen was agreed upon but AZ Alkmaar rejected Tottenham’s initial bid before turning down their most recent £16.5m offer.

The Dutch club's technical director, Max Huiberts, said: “We don’t want to let Vincent go for €18m. We hope he stays.”
