Transfer news: Arsenal exodus continues as Marouane Chamakh joins Premier League newcomers Crystal Palace

Newly promoted Crystal Palace have announced the permanent signing of Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh.

Chamakh was allowed to leave the Gunners after failing to make an impact at the Emirates, and he has signed a one-year deal with the Eagles having been awarded the number 29 shirt.

An official statement on the club website read: "Crystal Palace are delighted to confirm the signing of Morocco international striker Marouane Chamakh on a one-year deal.

"The former Arsenal forward has joined the Eagles on a permanent deal after completing a medical in SE25, and will wear the number 29 shirt."

The 29-year-old fell out of favour in north London despite having an impressive start to his Arsenal career after he joined on a free transfer from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux.

He scored 11 goals in his first season with the Gunners, but had to play second fiddle to Robin van Persie once the Dutchman returned to fitness.

He was sent on-loan to West Ham for the second half of last season, but struggled to find any sort of form and the Hammers chose not to convert the deal into a permanent signing.

Palace boss Ian Holloway is hopeful he can bring the best out of the France-born Moroccan international, claiming his style of man management tends to nurture out-of-form players back to reignite their careers.

“I normally do okay with people whose careers are faltering,” said Holloway, speaking after his side’s 1-0 loss against Lazio at the weekend. “I love them up and work with them, and hopefully I can get him back to how he was after he joined Arsenal.

“There was nothing wrong with him then when he scored eight in nine. But I wouldn't fancy being Robin van Persie's understudy, it can't have been fun.”
