Trabzonspor president Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu has confirmed that Demba Ba was set to join the Turkish side until an injury to Fernando Torres halted negotiations.

The Spaniard suffered a knee injury during Chelsea's 3-1 victory over Manchester United and could be out for a number of weeks.

Jose Mourinho, as a result, is now keen to keep hold of Ba until his striking situation can be rectified.

Whether that means they will bring a new signing in remains to be seen.

Speaking after the match, the former Inter Milan boss said: "The next few weeks is Demba and Samuel [Eto'o] and I hope they do well for us."

While his injury is bad news for Torres it's even worse for Trabzonspor who were perilously close to signing Ba for £7m.

Haciosmanoglu said: "We had agreed terms with Demba Ba.

"However, following Fernando Torres’ injury, Mourinho made it clear that they didn’t want to let go of Ba just yet."

The Turks have not be deterred, however, and may return for the former Newcastle United forward in the future.
