Liverpool are reportedly the latest club to join the race for the Porto midfielder Fernando who has also been linked with rivals Everton and Manchester United.

Napoli were thought to be close to signing the Brazilian, who has also been linked with a number of Serie A clubs, but it now appears that Brendan Rodgers has registered an interest in the player.

According to reports, Liverpool sent scouts to watch Porto's game against Benfica on Sunday with Fernando the player they had their eye on.

Fernando's contract is due to expire next summer, which has fuelled rumours he might be available for a reduced fee, however the player's agent, Antonio Araujo, has suggested that the 26-year-old was close to signing an extension with Porto.

Araujo said: “We’ve come to an agreement with Porto.

“The only thing that is missing are the details. Once they’re agreed we’ll sign.”

Fernando has played over 200 games for the club since joining in 2007.
