Transfer news: Tony Pulis given promise Crystal Palace will reinforce in transfer window

The Crystal Palace sporting director, Iain Moody, has reassured Tony Pulis that new signings will be made this month after the manager expressed frustration at the failure to add to his squad.

Pulis comes up against his former club Stoke at home this weekend – for the first time since he left in the summer – with Palace bottom despite enjoying an upturn in results since he took over in November. Loan striker Cameron Jerome is ineligible to face his parent club and with last season's top scorer, Glenn Murray, still out injured, the Premier League's lowest scorers, with just 13 goals, need more firepower.

After seeing Hull City buy Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long this week, Pulis admitted he is disappointed not to have signed anyone, with Blackburn defender Scott Dann and Bordeaux striker Cheick Diabaté both mooted as potential arrivals. But Moody remains confident they can bring in new faces.

"There's a lot of talking at the moment but we'll get there," he said. "We've got quite precise targets that we're trying to deal with. It's just sometimes it's in the interests of the selling club or the player to buy themselves a bit of time. That's probably the situation we're in and we're not alone in not having added to the squad.

"There's a limited pool of players available in January but we're doing what we can to make the squad better."

After winning promotion under Ian Holloway, Palace signed 16 players in the summer but lost nine of their first 10 matches. Pulis was promised new players as a condition of succeeding Holloway and has been on the lookout with Moody and co-chairman Steve Parish.

Highly-rated Wales midfielder Jonny Williams signed a new long-term deal this week but with the experience of two spells in administration still fresh at Palace, Moody admitted Parish is determined to take a prudent approach.
