Wayne Rooney’s future could be in the hands of the Manchester United fans after it has been reported that he will make his decision on the reception he gets when he makes his return from injury.

The majority of the United squad have the rest of the week off after they completed their tour of Asia and Australia, but Rooney was one of a small number of players to report for training on Thursday at the club’s Carrington training base.

He is believed to have had a brief chat with manager David Moyes, while continuing his rehabilitation from the hamstring injury he picked up before the pre-season tour got underway.

United have remained adamant that Rooney is not for sale despite Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho confirming his interest in the England international, while the Blues also saw a bid rejected last month.

Rooney is reluctant to move abroad, but friends of the forward claimed he was “angry and confused” over comments made by Moyes that he would not be first choice at Old Trafford.

Moyes has repeatedly said that he won’t be selling Rooney though, and the 27-year-old is yet to comment this summer on the situation.

Rooney was left out of the final-day squad named by Sir Alex Ferguson to face Swansea last season after he confirmed the striker had asked for a transfer away from United. He was given time to clear his head and decide on his future, but its appears he is no closer to reaching a decision.

If the fans respond well to his appearance in next Wednesday’s friendly in Sweden against AIK Stockholm and Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial against Sevilla at Old Trafford the following Saturday, Rooney may decide that his future lies with the Premier League champions – at least in the short-term.
