Transfer Talk: Hughes signs Salcido from PSV for £1.6m

Mark Hughes has made his third signing since becoming Fulham manager by bringing the Mexican defender Carlos Salcido to Craven Cottage from PSV Eindhoven on a three-year deal for a reported £1.6m.

"Carlos is a versatile defender who can play in a number of positions, so he gives us a number of options defensively," said Hughes, who recently brought the striker Moussa Dembele and the defender Rafik Halliche to the west London club.

"It has always been an ambition to play in England in the Premier League and it's great that I have been able to make the move to Fulham," said Salcido, who helped his national side reach the last 16 of the World Cup.

The Manchester City forward Emmanuel Adebayor has said he may move away from Eastlands if he is not playing first-team football. The 26-year-old, who featured for the City side that beat Timisoara 2- 0 in the Europa League on Thursday, has played just seven minutes of the team's opening Premier League eague games against Tottenham and Liverpool.

"If you're in a team and you're not playing, and there is a team that comes in [for you]," the Togo international said, "then I will definitely be on my way out because I'm a footballer and I love playing."

Adebayor's comments brought a swift response from City's football administrator, Brian Marwood. "[Adebayor] made a commitment to the football club," Marwood said. "They have to remain professional and have certain obligations to the football club."

Blackburn Rovers have landed the striker Benjani Mwaruwari on a one-year deal. The 32-year-old, who scored seven goals in 24 games during a two-year spell at Manchester City, was a free agent after being released by the Eastlands club at the end of last season.

Birmingham City's attempt to sign Wigan's French winger Charles N'Zogbia fell through last night after he failed to agree personal terms. The Birmingham manager Alex McLeish said: "We did everything that was asked of us and then the goalposts were moved at the last minute."

The Marseilles winger Hatem Ben Arfa is reported to have agreed terms with Newcastle after he travelled to England yesterday. He is expected to have a medical at St James' Park on Monday and will join on a season-long loan.
